The University of Arizona School of Art (Tucson) offers a BA in Art History, a BA in Studio Art and a BA in Design Arts & Practices, plus a BFA in Studio Art (2D Studies; 3D & Extended Media; Illustration, Design and Animation; Photography, Video & Imaging) and a BFA in Art & Visual Culture Education. BA applicants simply choose the major on the university application; BFA applicants also submit a College of Fine Arts application, and Studio Art BFA applicants send eight images of their work. The university’s early action deadline is November 1, 2026, the IELTS requirement is 6.5, nonresident tuition and fees are about USD 44,400, and tuition is frozen for students starting in fall 2027.

The School of Art at the University of Arizona in Tucson is part of the College of Fine Arts. This guide summarizes the official requirements for students at high schools in China (including A-Level, IB and AP), students at Canadian high schools (including BC/Vancouver) and transfer students.

1. Undergraduate degrees

  • BA in Art History: 120 units, at least 42 upper division.
  • BA in Studio Art: 120 units, at least 42 upper division, with a required minor so students can combine other university fields.
  • BA in Design Arts & Practices: 120 units with at least 54 in the major (30 upper division), in Visual, Object or Spatial Design, applying interdisciplinary design thinking to real-world problems such as climate change, public health and social issues.
  • BFA in Studio Art: 125 units, at least 42 upper division and 24 upper-division units in the chosen emphasis, with no minor required. Emphases: 2D Studies; 3D & Extended Media; Illustration, Design and Animation (IDA); Photography, Video & Imaging.
  • BFA in Art & Visual Culture Education: Community & Museums or K-12 Teaching Certification; admission is competitive and a 3.0 major GPA must be maintained.
  • BA vs BFA: the site says the BA suits students who want to draw on other university fields (such as business, space exploration or environmental sciences), while the BFA is for students heading to graduate study in art or a professional art career, with mostly studio coursework.

2. First Year Experience

  • BA Studio, BFA Studio and BFA Art Education majors start with the First Year Experience: ART 101 The Drawing Lab, ART 102 Pigments and Pixels, ART 103 Spatial Dynamics and ART 104 Photo, Video, Experience.
  • The two pages describe the length differently: the programs overview calls them eight-week thematic workshop courses, while the First Year Experience page calls them four full-semester courses taken in any order, ideally two in fall and two in spring.

3. How to apply: one step for the BA, two for the BFA

  • BA (Art History, Studio Art, Design Arts & Practices): no separate School of Art application; choose the major on the university application.
  • BFA: two steps. Submit the university application, then a separate College of Fine Arts supplemental application in your Future Wildcat page.
  • School of Art deadlines: first-year spring November 1 and fall May 1; transfer spring December 1 and fall July 3 (no year shown).
  • University deadlines (fall 2027): the application opens August 1, 2026, the November 1 early action deadline gives priority for admission, merit aid and the honors college, and early action decisions start January 15, 2027. Later applications move to regular decision, admitted on a space-available basis with decisions in batches in spring. The enrollment fee is due May 1.
  • How they fit: the School of Art’s BFA dates differ from the university dates, and fall transfer appears as July 3 on one page and June 1 on the other. The site does not explain how they work together, so BFA applicants should use the earlier date and confirm with the School of Art.

4. Portfolio and BFA supplemental materials

  • BFA Studio Art: the College of Fine Arts application, supplemental information (art awards, honors and experience) and a portfolio of eight images of original studio work as JPEGs at 72 ppi, 800 pixels on the longest side.
  • Evaluation criteria: technical proficiency and craftsmanship (mastery of techniques and formal elements such as composition, line and value), concept (investment in the subject, how well the work communicates, critical thinking), presentation (clear, good-quality documentation) and creativity (work made beyond assignments, assignments that go past formulaic answers).
  • Illustration, Design and Animation: students enter as pre-IDA and must pass a second portfolio review (the Spring Portfolio Review) after the First Year Experience; a 3.0 major GPA is required on admission.
  • BFA Art & Visual Culture Education: the College of Fine Arts application, a statement of intent (your history with art, why this degree, long-term career goals) and a 500-word essay on “What do you see as the role(s) of art and art education within contemporary society?”
  • National Portfolio Day: the School of Art hosts one on Saturday, October 24, 2026, where representatives from many art schools review portfolios and give feedback; bring no more than 15 works, as originals or on screen.

5. University application and international requirements

  • How to apply: the Common App. The application fee is USD 80 for non-Arizona residents and is non-refundable.
  • Essay: the 500-word essay is strongly encouraged but not required.
  • Testing: SAT/ACT are not required for general admission; submitted scores can help with placement or the Core Competency Requirements.
  • International students: follow the same process as U.S. students, as first-year or transfer applicants; all documents must be in English, ideally through a certified translation service.
  • English scores: IELTS 6.5; TOEFL iBT 79 (4 on the scale used from January 2026); Duolingo 110; PTE 60; Cambridge English 180; or SAT Reading and Writing 580 or ACT English 21. Scores must be within two years of the application date.
  • English through coursework: a C in English at Cambridge IGCSE/O Level or higher; IB English A Higher Level; four years of regular English at an American or IB high school, or three years at a school where English is the medium of instruction, each with a C in English. These need no score at application, though documents may be requested later.

6. Notes for students in China and Canada

  • China: the site does not say how the Gaokao or art exam (联考/校考) results are used. Apply through the international process with English scores and translations; BFA applicants add the eight-image portfolio.
  • Canada: there are no published BC grade requirements. The English rules have no country list, but three years at an English-medium high school with a C in English satisfies the requirement through coursework. Ask admissions how BC transcripts are reviewed.

7. Costs and scholarships

  • Nonresident estimate: tuition and fees USD 44,400, housing and food 17,770, books 600, travel and miscellaneous 5,000, about USD 67,770 in total. The chart labels its figures “2026-2026”.
  • Tuition freeze: for undergraduates starting in fall 2027, tuition and mandatory fees will not rise in 2027-28, including for nonresidents.
  • University merit aid: reviewed automatically at application. The award for non-Arizona high school graduates is the competitive Arizona Tuition Award; whether international students qualify is not published, so ask admissions. Applying by November 1 gives priority, and spring admits are not eligible for these first-year awards.
  • School of Art scholarships: more than USD 85,000 awarded each spring for the next year, applied for by current students through Scholarship Universe; Studio Art scholarships need a portfolio upload, plus a 3.0 cumulative and major GPA and full-time enrollment. Recommended students must submit a FAFSA; how this works for international students is not published.

8. Transfers and current students

  • University transfer: 12+ transferable college credits and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (applicants under 22 must also meet the Core Competency Requirements). Spring 2027: deadline December 1, 2026. Fall 2027: opens January 1, deadline June 1, 2027.
  • School of Art: BA majors are chosen on the university application; BFA applicants also submit the College of Fine Arts application and portfolio. The School of Art lists December 1 (spring) and July 3 (fall) for transfers.
  • Current students: a 2.0 cumulative GPA is needed to declare a School of Art major. BA majors need no application (meet an advisor); BFA applications are reviewed by faculty on a rolling basis from late August to May (not in summer), usually within 1–2 weeks. BA Studio Art students can apply to the BFA with an eight-image portfolio and a 3.00 major GPA.
