IELTS One Skill Retake: fix one band without sitting the whole test again

2 min read

Retake a single section within 60 days — but only if the original was on computer, at a participating centre, and the receiving institution accepts the result. Two of those are decided before you see your score.

A candidate who needs an overall 7.0 with no band below 6.5, and comes back with three 7s and a 6.0 in writing, used to have one option: sit all four sections again. IELTS One Skill Retake replaces that with a retake of the single section that let them down.

The conditions are strict

All of these have to be true:

  • The full test was taken at a centre that offers One Skill Retake — check before booking the original test, not after.
  • The full test was IELTS on computer. Paper tests are not eligible, and neither is IELTS Online.
  • The retake is sat within 60 days of the original test date.
  • Once per original test. One retake, one skill.

It is available for both IELTS Academic and General Training. Availability is by test centre and country rather than universal, so the question to ask a centre is not whether IELTS One Skill Retake exists but whether that centre offers it.

Plan it before the first test, not after

Two of those conditions are decided before a candidate knows their score. If the original booking is on paper, or at a centre that does not offer the retake, the option is gone no matter how the results look. Where a tight band requirement is in play, booking the computer-delivered test at a participating centre costs nothing extra and keeps the door open.

The 60-day window is the other planning constraint. It runs from the original test date, not from the day results arrive, so a candidate who waits two weeks for results and then deliberates has spent a third of it.

You end up with two result forms

After a One Skill Retake there are two Test Report Forms: the original, with all four skills, and a new one showing the retaken skill alongside the original scores for the other three. Both are valid for two years from the original test date.

The retake follows the same format, timing, marking and security as the corresponding section of the full test, and results go through the same verification before release.

Confirm the receiving institution accepts it

This is the caveat that matters most. IELTS recommends checking directly with the university or professional body before booking, because acceptance of a One Skill Retake result is their decision. UKVI accepts it for computer-delivered Academic and General Training in selected locations. A retake that an institution will not look at is 60 days and a fee spent for nothing.
