How the SSAT is scored, and when the results arrive

3 min read

The wrong-answer penalty applies at Middle and Upper Level but not at Elementary, which changes when to guess. Plus the parent form that holds scores back until it is signed.

Two things about SSAT scoring change how a student should sit the test, and one administrative step decides whether anyone ever sees the result.

Three levels, by current grade

  • Elementary Level: grades 3–4
  • Middle Level: grades 5–7
  • Upper Level: grades 8–11

Level follows the grade the student is in now, not the grade they are applying to.

What is on the paper

Middle and Upper Level share a structure: four multiple-choice sections — verbal (30 minutes), two quantitative sections (30 minutes each) and reading (40 minutes) — yielding verbal, quantitative, reading and total scores. The two quantitative sections hold 25 questions each and are scored as one set of 50. Reading has 40 questions. A 25-minute writing sample comes with every administration. With the experimental section and two breaks, a standard sitting runs 185 minutes.

Elementary Level has three multiple-choice sections: verbal (20 minutes), quantitative (30 questions, 30 minutes) and reading (28 questions across seven passages, 30 minutes), plus a 15-minute writing sample. With the experimental section and a break, 125 minutes in total.

The writing sample is not scored — and still matters

It carries no score. It is sent to every school that receives the report, which means it is read by admissions staff as a piece of the student's own writing, produced under time pressure and without help. Treating it as optional because it is unscored misreads what it is for.

Guessing: the right strategy depends on the level

This is the part worth getting right, because the two levels work differently.

  • Middle and Upper Level: one point for a correct answer, a quarter point deducted for an incorrect one, nothing for a question left blank. A blind guess across four options is close to break-even; eliminating even one option makes guessing worth it. Guessing at random on everything is not.
  • Elementary Level: one point for a correct answer and no penalty for a wrong one. There is no reason to leave anything blank.

Scores do not release until a parent signs off

Before any score reaches the family, the schools or a consultant, a parent or guardian has to complete the Testing Experience Statement in the SSAT account. It exists so families can report anything that interfered with the sitting. Until it is submitted, nothing is released — and there is no expedited scoring to fall back on.

When results arrive

  • Paper: typically within two weeks of the test date.
  • SSAT at Home: typically the Wednesday after the test.
  • Prometric: the Wednesday after the Sunday that closes the scoring period.

Families and schools receive scores on the same day. In rare cases release can take up to three weeks.

You can look before you send

Recipients added after scores are released get access immediately, so there is no need to nominate schools at registration. Look at the report first, then decide. Scores from the 2026–27 testing year can be sent to schools and consultants until 31 July 2028; anything from before 1 August 2025 can no longer be sent at all.
