How to Apply to Psychology at Nanyang Technological University: Direct Entry to the Four-Year BSocSci (Hons), and Requirements and Timeline for Chinese (Gaokao), International-Curriculum, Canadian High School and Transfer Students
At Nanyang Technological University, psychology is a four-year direct honours degree, the BSocSci (Hons) in Psychology, in the School of Social Sciences, and applicants can choose it directly among up to five programme choices. Chinese students applying with the Gaokao need 80% of the maximum score, and current Gao 3 students can apply with Gao 1 and Gao 2 results before a July interview; Canadian students need at least 90% in each of five Grade 12 subjects. Based on NTU’s official information for August 2027 entry, this guide covers application windows, subject and English requirements, tuition and the Tuition Grant with its three-year obligation, and scholarships.
At Nanyang Technological University (NTU), psychology is offered by the School of Social Sciences (SSS) in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. The degree is the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Psychology, a four-year direct honours programme, and you can apply directly to psychology. Here is what you need to know for August 2027 entry, based on NTU’s official information, for students at high schools in China (Gaokao and international curricula), students at Canadian high schools (including BC and Vancouver), and transfer students.
1. Programme and choices
- BSocSci (Hons) in Psychology: four years of core and elective psychology courses plus broadening courses in other disciplines. NTU says it has 18 full-time psychology faculty and about 500 undergraduates in its psychology programmes.
- Related options:
- Psychology with a Second Major in Biological Sciences;
- double majors: Economics and Psychology, and Psychology and Media Analytics (BSocSci), Psychology and Linguistics & Multilingual Studies (BA), and Biological Sciences and Psychology (BSc).
- Up to five choices: the online application allows up to five programme choices, which can be changed before the closing date.
- Research and practice: students work as research assistants, complete graduation projects or join URECA, and have held attachments at organisations such as the Institute of Mental Health and the Ministry of Education.
2. Subject requirements for psychology
- International qualifications: a good grade in Additional Mathematics at junior high level and a good grade in English at senior high level.
- IB: good grades in Mathematics SL and English SL; Math AA and AI are both accepted, with no preference.
- Psychology with Biological Sciences: also physics, chemistry or biology at junior high level.
- Interview: NTU’s subject requirements list psychology interviews as “on a selective basis”; only shortlisted applicants are invited.
3. Students at high schools in China
- With Gaokao results: at least 80% of the maximum Gaokao score, plus a valid CSSD Verification Report from CHSI.
- Current Gao 3 students:
- with good Gao 1 and Gao 2 results, you can apply before the Gaokao results come out;
- you must submit official Gaokao results within three days of release, or the application stops;
- eligible applicants are invited to an interview in July, and final decisions depend on interview performance.
- No Gaokao: students in the Gaokao curriculum who did not sit the exam, and those taking AP independently, apply in this category with high school graduation results, assessed case by case.
- Optional extras:
- AST results in at least English, Mathematics and one other subject; with Economics as the third subject, only non-Engineering and non-Science programmes are considered;
- at least five AP tests with scores of 4 or 5.
- Application window: 15 October 2026 to 19 March 2027. Interview invitations go out at the end of June 2027, with outcomes in mid-July.
- Decisions: based mainly on high school results, and only actual results; no provisional offers on predicted or pending results. NTU notes that admission is especially competitive for international applicants.
4. International curricula (A-Level, IB)
- UK A-Level: good passes in at least four A-Level subjects in the same sitting; international applicants with three are considered case by case only with outstanding achievements such as Olympiad medals. The window runs from 15 October 2026 to 19 March 2027; students sitting A-Levels in May/June 2027 are not considered this year and should apply in the next exercise.
- IB Diploma: a very good combination of 5s, 6s and 7s across three HL and three SL subjects, with good EE and TOK grades. The deadline is 19 March 2027; students sitting the May 2027 exams can apply on time and submit results within three days of the July release, authorising the IBO to send results to NTU.
5. Students at Canadian high schools
- British Columbia: the BC Senior Secondary Graduation Diploma with at least 90% in each of five Grade 12 subjects (Ontario: 90% in each of six Grade 12 U or M courses).
- Math: workplace and similar applied math courses are generally not sufficient for most programmes. Psychology is among the programmes for which Ontario’s Mathematics of Data Management meets the math prerequisite. Three or more relevant AP subjects may be considered favourably.
- Application window: 15 October 2026 to 20 January 2027, two months earlier than the Gaokao and IB deadline. Outcomes usually arrive from mid-June to mid-July 2027, and final-year students must submit final transcripts within three days of release.
- English: a test is needed only if your high school was not English-medium or your transcript shows ESL or EAL.
6. English requirements
- IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.5 in writing and speaking;
- TOEFL 90 or 4.5, with 25 (or 4.5) in writing and speaking;
- PTE 55 (speaking 55, writing 59); C1 Advanced 170 (writing and speaking 170); ACT with Writing 30; and, in the Gaokao category, AST English 220.
- IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and similar scores must be within two years of the application deadline.
- NTU notes these are generally the requirements for Science, Engineering and Computing; non-science programmes, highly competitive programmes and double majors may require higher scores.
7. Transfer students
- Students who have completed at least one term at another university, in Singapore or overseas, apply through the standard process and, if accepted, receive a first-year place.
8. Tuition, grants and scholarships
- 2026/27 tuition (per year, S$):
- international students with the MOE Tuition Grant: 21,400;
- without the grant: 40,600 for lab-based and 36,350 for non-lab-based programmes (NTU does not state which category psychology falls into);
- plus miscellaneous fees. Fees are fixed for your whole candidature.
- Tuition Grant terms: international students and permanent residents can apply for the grant in the online application and must sign a Tuition Grant Agreement to work for a Singapore-registered company for three years after graduation.
- Scholarships:
- applied for during the admission window, before you know your admission outcome;
- for international students, a scholarship is valid only if you take up the MOE Tuition Grant.
