A2 Key Prep in Vancouver & Richmond

CEFR A2

The first Cambridge English certificate

A2 Key sits at CEFR A2 and is where most younger learners start. Three papers, about 1 hour 40 minutes, and a result on a scale that says something even when the pass mark is missed.

Our Approach

Why choose our A2 Key program

01

Three papers, unevenly weighted

Reading and Writing is 60 minutes, 7 parts and 32 questions, and is worth half the result. Listening is 30 minutes including 6 minutes to transfer answers, 5 parts and 25 questions, worth a quarter. Speaking is 8–10 minutes for a pair, 2 parts, the last quarter.

02

Speaking happens with another candidate

The Speaking test is face to face with one or two other candidates and two examiners — one talks to the candidates, the other listens. Practising alone prepares for a format that does not exist.

03

The score says more than pass or fail

Grade A is 140–150 and earns a certificate stating ability at B1, a level above the exam. Grades B and C are 120–139 at A2. A score of 100–119 still earns a certificate, stating A1. Below 100 there is no result and no certificate at all.

04

Paper testing ends after December 2026

The paper-based A2 Key is withdrawn after the last session in December 2026 and continues only as a digital exam. A2 Key for Schools stays available in both formats, which is the version most of our students take.

Questions

A2 Key preparation — FAQ

What score is a pass?

120 on the Cambridge English Scale, which is a Grade C at CEFR A2. Below 100 no result or certificate is issued at all.

Is it worth taking before IELTS?

For a younger learner, yes. A2 is where the habits form; attempting IELTS before a B1 level usually measures the gap rather than closing it.
