1 hour 58 minutes
Under two hours, and every question counts more
The GRE was cut in half in September 2023. Fewer questions on the same score scale means each one carries more weight — and the second section of each measure is chosen by how you did on the first.
Our Approach
Analytical Writing first with a single Analyze an Issue task in 30 minutes, then two Verbal sections (12 questions in 18 minutes, 15 in 23) and two Quantitative (12 in 21 minutes, 15 in 26). The unscored section and the scheduled break are both gone.
The first section of each measure is of average difficulty. How you do on it decides the difficulty of the second. Accuracy early therefore sets the ceiling for that measure, which is the opposite of banking time for later.
The Analyze an Argument task was removed in 2023. The Analytical Writing score now rests on a single piece of writing, so there is no second attempt to recover on.
ETS says so plainly: the test has fewer questions and the score scale did not change. A careless error costs more than it did on the old four-hour test.
