Add Additional Expenses (Optional)
Estimated living expenses may already include transportation and personal expenses. Only add costs that are not included in the university's published estimates.
How it works
- Published University Cost Data: U.S. universities report tuition and other cost information through the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). We use published tuition figures, estimated housing and meal costs, books and supplies, and other reported expenses to calculate an estimated annual cost of attendance.
- Projected Costs for Your Entry Year: Because published cost data may lag behind current university fees, we estimate future costs using historical tuition increases or the annual increase rate you select.
- All Costs Shown in U.S. Dollars: All estimates are displayed in U.S. dollars (USD). Currency conversion is not included, so your actual cost in Canadian dollars or another currency will depend on exchange rates.
FAQ
Why is the tuition estimate different from what I've seen on a university's website?
Public universities in the U.S. generally charge lower tuition for in-state students and higher rates for out-of-state students. International students are often charged the out-of-state rate, although tuition policies vary by university and program. This calculator uses reported tuition data to estimate costs, which may differ from the international student rates published on a university's website.
Can international students get scholarships or financial aid?
Financial aid policies vary by university. Some institutions offer need-based financial aid to international students, while others provide merit-based scholarships or limited funding opportunities. At need-aware institutions, requesting financial aid may be considered during the admissions process. A small number of universities are need-blind for international applicants and meet full demonstrated financial need. Check each university's official financial aid website for eligibility requirements and available funding.
What isn't included?
The estimate may not include airfare, health insurance, visa and SEVIS fees, housing during academic breaks, or other personal expenses. Some universities include certain expenses in their published cost estimates. Check what's already included before adding extra costs to avoid double-counting.
